Have you ever had an “ekphrastic experience”?
The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms defines exphrasis as “A rhetoric manner devised in ancient Roman literature for the vivid description of works of art, whether real or imaginary.”
Think Keats and his “Ode to a Grecian Urn” ...
Well, that’s what ekphrasis used to be. The Salamanca Collection is bringing the ekphrastic experience to Tasmania with the second poetry evenings, run in conjunction with the Tasmanian Writer’s Centre. |

| If that isn’t enough culture for you, the Red Dot cafe will be serving wine, fair trade coffee (with Baileys, if you’re ESPECIALLY cold ...) and our famous organic hot chocolate to warm you up!
It will be a night to remember! We look forward to seeing you then! |

Sam, who was born in Tasmania was the youngest art teacher ever appointed at the famous Julian Ashton Art School. Join us with this Brett Whitely Art Scholarship Prize Winner. Sam is represented by Eva Breuer Art Gallery in Sydney and by The Salamanca Collection in Tasmania. Sam is a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize 2009.
Sam ran this course last year for the first time in the Gallery last year. The event was a "sellout", and a huge success! Works from all participants were hung in the gallery for a weekend, and there were many very proficient pieces amongst them!
Robyn said: “It has a been a privilege to have a tutor from the Julian Ashton Art School who is experienced in the old master’s techniques. The course has been a challenge but most rewarding. Sam was an excellent tutor… and after the Sam’s tuition I will be more confident..”
Rosemary said: “I felt welcome, comfortable and inspired to paint in the atmosphere of the gallery in the company of a group of likeminded individuals. Sam being an excellent tutor and wonderful artist was able to extract the best results from the group on a one to one basis. I have learned so much and will now be able to apply techniques… Congratulations." |
